Urban Wildlife

A fat, screeming woodpecker baby

Keeps my sister awake at night

The parents fly in & out to feed, for all to see

A willow tree in a garden is a safe place of might

A New Month

Meticulously & peacefully, woodpecker is hammering

Alas, there’s smog on the air

Meaning, a hot day of Eastern wind we’re expecting

Fresh coffee, for a moment, diminishes my care

A few trees further away

Than other years

The trusted hammering-away

Betrays a presence one hears
