The European honeybee is in trouble out here from various mites and funguses and myserious hive collapse syndrome. The hives are placed in fields and orchards for pollination of crops. The most commonly blamed culprits are agricultural chemicals weaking the bees. But I also think that artificially big honey bee populations might be contributing to the spread. The European bee is not even an American native.
The Russian honeybee and the infamous African honeybee (also not native here) do not seem to suffer from the same maladies as much.
Our honey here all comes from bee farms. The wild population is largely untouched by humans.
It was a column I read. Not ‘big’ enough to deserve the label fake news, I’d say.
