When the child is 17 and chooses a certain college or job, it’s their decision. Also in other situations, we can protect or shield them, but I’d say it’s wisdom to keep lines of communication open. And not dismiss them when they do something that’s perhaps not too well thought out.

Umm… Yeah, I disagree. Most of the time young people can’t see far enough ahead. Little things add up to big things and they can be hurt for life.
Maybe it depends on how young they are…
